All about Unalome Tattoos

Now this is an off beat blog. But I can take the liberty of the weekend, so thought of sharing about Unalome Tattoos.

I love tattoos and I recently got myself inked for the second time 🙂 I got tattooed first time when my daughter was just six months old. I engraved her name on my right hand and after that I was searching for something equally worthy and meaningful.

My Daughter’s Name : Ishaanvi (meaning – goddess of knowledge)

I kept on postponing this because I could never find something beautiful yet holding some significant meaning behind it.

Last week, me and my husband decided to get a tattoo done as we were postponing it for a long time now.

Hence, while searching all around Pinterest, I came across Unalome Tattoos. I read about it, downloaded its designs, and the reason behind sharing this post is the tattoo design and the beautiful meaning and spiritual connection any Unalome tattoo holds..

Unalome Tattoos With the help of wikepedia I am trying to explain what exactly Unalome represents.

The unalome symbol represents the path to enlightenment in the Buddhist culture. The spirals are meant to symbolize the twists and turns in life, and the straight lines the moment one reaches enlightenment or peace and harmony and the lotus flower symbolizes overcoming adversities towards perfection, thus perfectly integrating the meaning of the Unalome.

The Unalome is originally a hindu symbol that graphically recalls Shiva´s third eye, representing the path of  wisdom and perfection.

I chose this tattoo for a very simple and very convincing reason. A Tattoo is one thing which goes with us till the grave and I no one carry something which they might regret a few years later.

As soon as I understood the meaning of these tattoos, I could so much relate to the designs. This is it, I thought. This is how our life is.

We go through so much in life, so many ups and downs, topsy-turvy situations, learnings, failures, the line is hardly straight in real life. But yes, we learn to survive all the odds.

We learn to unbend the curves and make them straight for us, and in the end we try to attain nirvana. We make peace with ourselves. We accept and embrace the little beauty life has to offer around us.

Hence, if I can carry something, which could serve as a reminder that the line will become straight, the lotus will bloom and I will attain enlightenment, then I will hold it tight forever.

Without giving a second thought, I selected the design with the lotus flower. The lotus flower is one of the most ancient and deepest symbols of our planet.

It’s significant such that even though it grows in muddy water and yet rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty, untouched by the impurity, lotus symbolizes the purity of heart and mind.

It reminds me that the path is not always straight it might be full of endless knots and sufferings, but it has a lot to offer of we observe closely.

There are many designs of an Unalome Tattoo, but this one captivated my attention. At first, the Unalome designs can look like cute and insignificant doodle art, but the symbol is both meaningful and mysterious!

While reading a lot about this tattoo I also concluded that these designs are a part of spiritual symbols related to Theravada Buddhism and Hinduism (curling known as Bindu in Sanskrit and Tigli in Tibetan). But the most common and significant part is that they both represent the path to enlightenment.

Hope you enjoyed reading about the Unalome Tattoos.

Thank you and have a nice weekend 🙂

Much Love and Gratitude

Priyanka
