Suicide Prevention, time to talk.

As per World Health Organization, 800 000 people commit suicide every year. Believe it or not India is the second country with the increasing suicide rates every year.

It is said prevention is better than cure, but how to cure something, of which we are not even aware of. For any suicide prevention we need to aware ourselves from our surroundings and people breathing with us, we need to be aware, be present and be there. 

May be by simply being there we can save a tragedy, we can save a life. It all happens in front of us, we watch them decay, lost, destroyed but we just judge, assume and never reach out.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. It’s time we talk about this important issue and take some effort to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic.

We can reach out to those who are affected by suicidal thoughts. We can raise awareness and help people to understand that mental illness needs treatment like any other illness.

Sometimes the most simple things in life turn out to be the biggest complexities of our life. May be simply asking few questions could help, could ease someone to open up.

There are signs, there are alarming situations which gives a message that something is not right and yet we ignore.

Suicide is the last resort for a person dealing with severe mental health condition over a long period. Suicidal thoughts are part of underlying deep and densed mental health conditions, which can affect anyone regardless of any age or gender.

If a person express that he feels unworthy and feels like commiting suicide, take care, help him to get away with that thought and monitor his thought process.

Every year thousands of individuals die by suicide, leaving behind their friends and family members to navigate the tragedy of loss. In many cases, friends and families affected by a suicide loss don’t even know the exact reason of the suicide or find it hard to believe that just because of some stressful incident, how can someone take his own life?

The feelings of shame and attached stigma prevent them from talking openly and it results in more and more such cases, it is high time we share our stories, we understand that mental health is as important as our physical health.

People seek help deep inside, they feel fearful to open up because they will be judged, they want to be heard, they want to yell, start reading between the lines and hear those unsaid words.
