The Power of Concentration

The ability to focus on something, with all your attention is the level of concentration you are giving to the subject matter in hand. If someone is known for their better concentration power then, maybe they pay attention well to the situation around them.

What is the purpose of having a good concentration and how is it different from person to person?

I feel the better the concentration, better the results. High achievements in art, music and any creative field are the results of better concentration. The main difference, which constitutes between man and man is the level of their concentration. Compare the lowest with the highest one, we all concentrate upon things which interest us, which we like to do or love to do. The trouble with such concentration is that we do not control our mind, it controls us. It drives our concentration on things we love like listening to music, admiring a piece of art and holds onto it as long as it chooses to.

Now the question is, What can be done to develop this power of concentration?

Almost all of our sufferings are the result of lack of the power to detach, we are so much attached to the things we love that we cannot shift our focus on other things. This causes suffering as well. Hence along with developing our power of concentration, we first need to learn to detach. We must learn not only to attach the mind to one thing exclusively but also detach it at a moment’s notice and place it on something else. This is the systematic development of the mind.

If I had a chance to do my education over again and had any voice in the matter, I would not study the facts but would develop the power of concentration and detachment, and then with a perfect instrument, I could collect facts at my own will.  There is no limit to the power of the human mind. The more concentrated it is, the more powerful it becomes.

As Swami Vivekananda suggests, the simple technique to connect to self is; to start breathing. Regular breathing puts the body in a harmonious condition and it is then easier to reach the mind palace of yours.
